Channel 4 are to broadcast the reburial of Richard III’s remains live from Leicester Cathedral next year.
This comes after distant relatives of the King lost a court battle over where his remains were to be buried, claiming that King Richard would have wished to be buried in York. Since the discovery of the King’s remains under a car park in Leicester last year, Channel 4 have produced an in-depth documentary, Richard III: The King In The Car Park, and are to be the only channel to broadcast the ceremony which will last several days.
Along with the ceremony, Channel 4 plan to feature historians and royal experts as well as the University of Leicester team which carried out the original dig. Jay Hunt, the channel’s creative officer, said: “We’re proud to be the only broadcaster who committed to this extraordinary story from the very start and we’re delighted to be able to see that story through to its conclusion with the broadcast of this remarkable international event.”
