While Dallas Buyers Club was of critical acclaim and gave Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto the best male actor and supporting actor Oscar respectively, it did have one major criticism in that it focused on a straight protagonist that was suffering from the disease and how he changed.
The Normal Heart however proves to be giving the voice back to homosexual activists that tried to change the way that HIV/AIDS was treated.
Mark Ruffalo plays the main protagonist who was there to witness the start of the AIDS crisis in the 80’s and sets out to try and help shed light on the disease and help cure it.
Ruffalo is also starring alongside other big Hollywood names such as Julia Roberts, who plays a doctor who treats people with the disease, and Taylor Kitsch who plays an activist that helps out Ruffalo. With HIV/AIDs affecting more homosexual men than straight men Ruffalo will be playing a homosexual alongside Matt Bomer who will star as his journalist boyfriend.
The Normal Heart will premier on HBO on May 25, 2014.
