BBC viewers have been left frustrated by poor sound quality in their dramas yet again following the first episode of Jamaica Inn.
Over 100 complaints had been made following the episode, the first in a TV adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel. The complaint is always the same, with viewers disappointed that the dialogue of the characters can barely be heard. This has been a consistent problem with BBC dramas, mostly high-budget projects such as Parade’s End and Birdsong.
Celebrities took to Twitter to comment on their difficulty, with Strictly Come Dancing’s Arlene Phillips tweeting “Did anyone else have trouble hearing BBC One Jamaica Inn?”
BBC has apologised for this mistake several times since the first reported problems in 2009, following complains over The Wire, yet the problem still has not been properly addressed. The BBC’s most recent statement concerning the matter was, “There were issues with the sound levels last night and for technical reasons they could not be altered during transmission. We are adjusting the dialogue levels in episode two and three to address audience concerns so they can enjoy the rest of the drama and would like to apologise to those viewers who were affected.”
