According to Studiocanal, a press release yesterday has now confirmed the UK, French and German release dates for Jose Padilha’s RoboCop remake. The day in question is August 9th, 2013, a whole year before we are able to see whether the remake does the original any justice.
When questioned whether Studiocanal could give away any more information regarding the narrative, a spokesperson stated; “In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.”
So, that seems pretty spot on to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original! However, in an interview, the director mentioned; “I have my take on it. And I can tell you this: In the first RoboCop when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts.” Maybe his own take will focus more on the war drones mentioned above?
With a cast including Joel Kinnaman, Samuel L Jackson and Gary Oldman, we will just have to wait until next year to see how well Padilha’s RoboCop compliments Verhoeven’s original action-packed masterpiece.
