With J.J. Abrams long since jumping space-opera ship to Disney and Star Wars, Paramount have been in talks to replace him looking for someone to helm the latest in their rebooted franchise of Star Trek films.
Today a successor has been found in the form of Roberto Orci a long time collaborator with Abrams. Although Orci hasn’t directed before he has co-written the likes of Lost and Alias for TV under Abrams’ tutelage and also treatments for the big-screen including Cowboys & Aliens, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Transformers and, helpfully, the previous two Star Trek films.
Orci and his long-time co-writer Alex Kurtzman have recently announced that they are parting ways to focus on solo projects and this will mark the first of Orci’s with Kurtzman looking to make Venom, the Spider-Man spin-off.
In true Abrams’ style, the plot is currently hush hush, but we would naturally expect the likes of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and co. to all return.
