As the Sure advert keeps telling us, women are strong. Not strong but; kicking ass and taking names strong. When we think of strong women in film, we think of the likes of car jacking ‘Fast and Furious’ star Michelle Rodriguez or ‘Alien’ slaughtering Sigourney Weaver; not Miss Maine 1995 Katie Aselton.
But here she is. The beautiful Miss USA runner up directs and stars in ‘Black Rock’. The story of strength and survival against unmountable odds. Our sweet Katie is joined by her two childhood friends, played by Lake Bell and Kate Bosworth, as they return to a childhood haunt to relive the days when things were easier. The three go for a camping weekend on the formidable Black Rock. So far so good, a female version of ‘Without a Paddle’ to the casual observer. But things do get a little hairy.
Our three heroines stumble upon three hunters on the island. After getting to know each other better around the camp fire, if you know what I mean, one of the men tries to take advantage of Miss Maine. This femme fatal swiftly deals him a hefty blow of feminism and caves his head in with a rock. And so it begins. Boys versus girls on the island of Black Rock. A very brief 80 minutes of hunters and hunted. A female ‘Deliverance’ off the coast of Maine. In cinemas Friday 21st of June.
