What’s the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing day-in, day-out, and expecting things to change. Maybe it’s doing that and also murdering people at the same time. Or maybe doing that and murdering people at the same time and singing while you do it. Yeah – that’s probably it.
The beloved children’s favourite Doctor, Matt Smith, is to become something very child unfriendly indeed. The Doctor Who star is hanging up his trademark bowtie for a Valentino suit and Oliver Peoples glasses to become the yuppie murdering psychopath of ‘American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman, in musical form.
Taking on the character played by Christian Bale in the 2000 movie adaption, Smith will frolic around New York killing his contenders, contemporaries, and companions in a musical sing-song of blood, sweat, and tears. An investment banker that chops up his quarry with gay abandon.
The idea is from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. A man with a weird liking of both musical theatre and horror, writing for both hit TV sensation Glee and Kimberly Peirce’s modern adaption of Steven King’s ‘Carrie’. He has now decided to combine the two with a musical version of Bret Easton Ellis’ portrayal of the real American dream, ‘American Psycho‘.
Playing at the Almeida Theatre in London’s West End, the musical is directed by Rupert Gould and features a original soundtrack created by Tony and Grammy award winning Duncan Sheik. Huey lewis and the News is out then. The show runs between December 3 and January 25 and is bound to cause a stir.
