Director Marc Webb has announced that after The Amazing Spider-Man 3 he will take a leave from the franchise.

The Amazing Spider-Man 4 is already pencilled in for release on May 4, 2018, which means that a new director will need to be chosen before anything for this film can begin. Of course there is the entire third entry of the series to take on before any production for the fourth film begins. Webb speaks of his future plans concerning the franchise, saying:

“I’d like to be involved as a consultant and I’ve already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. I’ve had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it’ll be the time to find something else.”

Drew Goddard, director of Cabin in the Woods has been named as a potential candidate, though there is sure to be more than just one director raising a hand for a chance at the film. While discussing future plans Webb also gave some more information on the upcoming second edition to The Amazing Spider-Man series. Speaking of character Felicity Jones, saying that her character “works in OsCorp”. Avoiding the need to reveal any spoilers, he only spoke briefly on the main villians of the film, “Electro’s really the main villain in the movie,” he pointed out. “Rhino makes a brief appearance.

Webb then spoke of Dane DeHane’s character Harry Osborn:

“I wanted him to be as smart as Peter Parker, James Franco is a very intelligent man, but his Harry Osborne was a little bit dopey. This Harry Osborne is incredibly sharp. Harry and Peter are bound by the loss of their fathers and their abandonment issues. In Raimi’s film, Harry is trying to protect Peter from getting bullied or whatever, and in this one, they’re more like brothers.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into UK cinemas on April 18.
