Avatar director James Cameron became the first man to reach the deepest part of the ocean alone. What an impressive achievement for the film buff! Congratulations!
To put things in to perspective, the director headed for the deepest point of the Mariana Trench. The trench is 120 times larger than the Grand Canyon and over a mile deeper than Mount Everest. Cameron had been preparing to break the world record of diving to the bottom for seven years!
According to his twitter, he landed at 2:52pm PST and managed to tweet; “Just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you.” How he managed to get internet connection in the deepest point of the ocean I will never know! He has since tweeted that he arrived back on the shore safely.
The director took with him lots of cameras to film his experience. Maybe this footage will make an appearance in one of Cameron’s future projects? The director has been teasing us with ideas about exploring Pandora’s oceans in the massive 3D CGI hit that braced our screens in 2009. Maybe we will get to view his footage in the Avatar sequels?
