The show itself was about The Planeteers, 5 children from different continents, coming together with magical rings, trying to save the world. When the situation’s got too tough though, which was a frequent occurence, they would combine their rings and call upon Captain Planet to help them out.
The show is considered way ahead of its time given that it was all about enviromental issues and the stopping of various nefarious villains destroying the planet by the green-haired superhero. Although given how long it has been since it first graced our screens in September 1990, it seems strange to do this now, especially since most of its original fans will be in their mid-twenties by now. However, given the recent stint of world saving films being released, it makes sense that they try to aim at the children/tween audience after 2006’s An Inconvenient Truth, albeit with a watered-down version for the kids.
With huge A-list Hollywood actors of the time voicing most of the shows antagonists, whether or not the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Sheen, Meg Ryan, Danny Glover, Jeff Goldblum and Elizabeth Taylor will be back is doubtful, but the film is definitely being developed as we speak, presumably as an animated film rather than a Marvel/DC Comics live-action affair.
The opening credits to the TV show is below, and so here’s what we can expect from the film:
