‘A Field in England‘ is the latest british film with a very strange marketing plan. Accepting the futility of holding back release dates due to downloading and the internet, it releases today everywhere. And when we say everything, we mean it all. Cinema, DVD, TV, and On Demand.
Set during the English civil war, ‘A Field in England’ stars The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt as one of a group of deserters. In their hast to flee the battlefield they stumble right into the path of a treasure seeking alchemist (Michael Smiley). He captures them and puts them to work digging for gold in a field in England. Surviving on wild mushrooms, it all starts to go a bit weird as it all turns into a paranoid trip of chaotic magic when the group learn the treasure might be something other than gold. The whole thing is directed by Ben Wheatley, award winning director of brit comedy ‘Sightseers’.
Film4, Picturehouse Entertainment, 4DVD, and Film4 Channel are partnering for this innovative watch-it-where-you-want experiment on Friday 5th July. Sue Bruce-Smith, Film4’s Head of Commercial and Brand Strategy, said on the subject: “Ben is undoubtedly one of our boldest, brightest and most audience savvy filmmakers and so it made complete sense to look to develop a project with him that would lend itself to this kind of daring and innovative release.
The film will be airing on Filmfour at 10:45 tonight, in your local Picturehouse cinema and be available online to buy or watch. It is also being showcased in the East End Film Festival on the 8th at the Hackney Picturehouse.
