Although Kim Kardashian and Kanye West featured on the cover of US Vogue several weeks ago, everyone is still talking about it! The most recent contribution to the topic comes from The Financial Times’ Vanessa Friedman as she interviewed Vogue’s creative director, Grace Coddington to reveal some juicy information.
The interview was the perfect send off for Friedman (as leaves FT for The New York Times), as Coddington didn’t hold back. The 73-year-old spoke about her body image, preferring to shoot models, her long-time colleage Anna Wintour and most interestingly, the Kimye shoot.
According to Coddington, it was her idea to get Kimye on the Vogue cover after all, not Wintour’s. Although she knew the shoot would raise a few eyebrows, she believed it was the perfect decision.

“There was a wedding story to be done, and Anna probably had them in mind, because she had been seeing a lot of Kanye, so she said, ‘Maybe we should shoot it on lookalikes.’ And I thought, ‘Why not just do it on the real thing? This is Vogue.’ And I do think Kim Kardashian represents this moment in our culture. I’m fascinated by her, in the same way I’m fascinated by the people I see on the street or the subway.”
The shoot was completely kept under wraps, so much that not even the designers knew who was involved and they were merely sent the couple’s measurements, but in the end, everyone involved was ecstatic come the final edit. Although, as we know, numerous people have expressed their hate for the high-fashion mag’s choice, as Coddington added, “I got an envelope from Texas, with the cover ripped up into little pieces inside.”
