Due to Disney having a long period of non-diverse princesses Tumblr artist, lettherebedoodles recaptures some of the most popular Disney princesses with a change of racial backgrounds.
The four individual princesses who have already been portrayed as women of colour by Disney are: Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, Fa Mulan from Mulan, Native American Pocahontas from Pocahontas, and Waitress Tiana from The Princess and the Frog.
Tumblr artist also known as TT clarifies: “There wasn’t really any rhyme or reason to my choices, I just started fiddling with the images.”
She explains that many Disney fairy tales were removed from their original cultural contexts and modified such as Aladdin was originally established in China, and not in Agrabah. TT ends by saying: “I create racebent characters simply for fun and because I’d love to see more diversity in our media.”
We see this as a start to involving different racial backgrounds and involving diversity into children’s lives, allowing them to see a bigger picture of the world and the people around them.
