Even if you’ve not seen American Beauty, chances are you’ll be familiar with one particular image from the film, featuring Mena Suvari writhing around naked in a ton of rose petals.
This ‘rose petals in the bath’ image is so iconic that it has been reimagined several times, perhaps most memorably by the contestants of Greece’s Next Top Model in a stunning themed shoot.
Now another photographer has decided to put their own twist on that American Beauty shot, and with a particular angle in mind. Carey Fruth photographed 14 women – all of different shapes, sizes and colours – making like Mena Suvari, with only a few strategically-placed petals to preserve their modesty as they pose for the camera.
Fruth wanted to send out the message that we are all beautiful – not just thin, white and blonde. She pulled the shoot off perfectly, and all of her subjects look relaxed and, most importantly, comfortable in the skin they’re in.
Fruth explained to the Huffington Post: “Almost every image you see in mainstream media is of one type of woman, thin white women to be specific … But that is not actually the majority of women in our country look like. America is made up of all types of women. Women who are hungry to see themselves represented in a beautiful way. And why shouldn’t they?”
