George R.R. Martin has recently defended the controversy of the rape scene in the Games of Thrones episode aired last month. The writer of the novels claims that the show would not be the same without them, and said the producers were right to have included rape scenes as the episodes would be “dishonest” without them.
Many viewers have said one particular rape scene within last month’s episode was unnecessary and simply used for shock value as it was not included in the novel.
However from what George R.R Martin said these particular scenes reflect European history, which is was the series is based on.
He said: “Rape unfortunately, is still part of war today. It’s not a strong testament to the human race, but I don’t think we should pretend it doesn’t exist.”
“I wanted to portray struggle. Drama comes out of conflict. If you portray a utopia, then you probably wrote a pretty boring book,” he added,
Quite often, there isn’t a filter on what is shown on TV, but were the producers right in airing this kind of sexual violence on TV?
