Even if you haven’t watched the latest series of Orange is the New Black yet, chances are, if you use the internet, you will have heard a lot about Ruby Rose this week.
Well, now the Australian actress/model/DJ/TV presenter/MTV VJ/recording artist (phew!) is getting even more love due to someone unearthing this video that Rose made last year, before all the OITNB frenzy kicked off. You can watch the video above.
Rose declares on YouTube that the video, entitled Break Free, is “a short film about gender roles, Trans, and what it is like to have an identity that deviates from the status quo.” In it, we see Rose morph from an exaggerated feminine version of herself (all bodycon dresses, blonde hair and glossy make-up) into the cool androgynous figure we’re more familiar with seeing.
It’s definitely worth a watch for its powerful messages about self-identity. It also provides an interesting insight into Rose’s mindset.
In a recent interview with Elle, Rose explained the concept of gender fluidity, saying that it “is not really feeling like you’re at one end of the spectrum or the other. For the most part, I definitely don’t identify as any gender.” She continued, “I’m not a guy; I don’t really feel like a woman, but obviously I was born one. So, I’m somewhere in the middle, which – in my perfect imagination – is like having the best of both sexes.”
