We test out the Samsung Galaxy Fame as a festival phone. But was it any good?

When off to a festival your phone can become a bit of a pain in the ass. Unless you downgrade to something that can just about run Snake, you are probably going to spend more time worrying about battery life than you are keeping in touch with your friends, getting new friends numbers and taking lots of awesome photos of your time there. That, or you have to fork out money for a locker purely to charge the damn thing.

Three Mobile was kind enough to send us a Samsung Galaxy Fame mobile phone to give a test run at this years Reading Festival. What is basically a downsized, and down-graded Samsung Galaxy S4, would this little brother version be able to help fix those festival mobile issues? We sure hoped so!

First off, let’s take a look at the tech! What we have is a 3.5″ screen, running Android 4.1 and a 5MP camera. Doesn’t sound much, but to be honest we found we could do pretty much everything we could on our usual phone; just on a smaller, less defined screen. We had email running, Whatsapp, Instagram and the camera quality was more than enough; remember, back in the day most digital cameras on their own were 3MP so this is better that those.

Visually the phone may not look as pretty, and the screen is a lot less impressive, but when it comes to what it can actually do, you can’t really complain too much. Plus your at festival so who cares? Having a less expensive phone is also going to make you less of a target for pick-pockets as well which is always a bonus.

It’s main appeal though, is the battery life. We managed to run the phone for nearly a day and a half, without having to limit our usage, before hitting those warning signs. One great thing about the whole Galaxy series is that you can also buy additional batteries. Grab yourself an extra before you go and your set for the weekend pretty much. Can’t complain at that. Worst case scenario is you goto a charging station at the festival, once. Better than having to do it daily that’s for sure.

Retailing at around  £64.99 on Pay As You Go it’s a pretty good investment. If you lose it at least you haven’t paid out a fortune and it’s going to give you all the basics of your standard phone with more battery life and less stress. I know I’m gonna be using this one for every festival now.
