With the recent announcement that the Spice Girls may reform next year I thought I should post the news in to one of the Spice Girls fan groups on Facebook.
Now the biggest group seems to be one called Spice Girls (Girls Power) and with over 15,000 members, it seemed like the ideal one to join. It wasn’t long before my request to join was approved and became a fully fledged member of Spice Girls (Girls Power). As I readied myself to get involved in some wild spice talk, what I actually found was quite frankly…. a little strange!
Expecting, like any other fan group, for it to be full of bustling talk about Ginger, Baby, Scary, Sporty and Posh, I instead found what seemed to be a stream of mainly photos of Asian men. I mean, there was a few photos of girls (the vast majority of these Asian as well and usually the same few girls) but a lot of men, posing like this was some sort of underground Asian dating site disguised as a Spice Girls fan group.
Unfortunately due to copyright laws I’m unable to post examples but, just trust me on this, there was enough to seem a bit weird.
Scrolling back quite far into the groups history, I have yet to find one actual post about the Spice Girls. Although I did find a post saying everyone should watch a video of someone getting shot in the face on Halo 5.
What was I looking at exactly? Why was no-one talking about the Spice Girls?
I mean the evidence was there to suggest this was a Spice Girls group. The Girl(s) Power reference in the title firstly, even though it is mispelt, and then in the groups bio: “5 girls..5 sister..one heart..one soul..one goal..one dream..whatever lifes may bring..FRIENDSHIP NEVER ENDS”. There are 5 members of the Spice Girls and that end line is from ‘Wannabe’! So what on earth is happening here?
I decided to test the waters by posting a simple status saying: “Who here likes the Spice Girls”, complete with smiley face on the end. My post was approved and I waited anxiously to see if I was just getting this group all wrong and everyone was indeed, Spice Girls fans!
15 minutes passed and my post was seemingly just ignored as people commented on some photos and someone thought it right to share a video of a “Computer Simulation Of A Massive Asteroid Hitting Earth Set To Pink Flloyd ‘The Great Gig In The Sky”. WTF?!
I’ve noticed in the group they refer to eachother as “spice-mates” so I thought I best Google this and see if this is a Spice Girls term. Maybe I just wasn’t down with what the Spice Girls are all about these days.
Indeed it does appear that “spice mates” is a saying used by Spice Girl fans. There seems to be a blog and a twitter account with the name.

Go again this begged the question…WHY THE FUCK IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THE SPICE GIRLS?!?! WHAT EVEN IS THIS?!?!?
I decided to go direct to the source, the admins. I tagged one of them in a message to ask what her favourite Spice Girl song was. She approved my message into the group and I waited anxiously for her reply. Suddenly a notification pops up, “All songs of spice girls we love it that’s why“.
That wasn’t enough for me. I was really starting to be convinced that no one in here even knows who they are never mind has a favourite song and all these Spice Girl references just so happened to be total coincidence and this could just be a group for girls who really like spices!
After me asking for an exact song she then replied again, “Let Love Lead The Way..hahaha“
Suddenly something hit me. I had been missing something right in front of my face!
The number of admins on this group is 5, there was an image at the top of the group with 5 girls…this was the Spice Girls but not as we know it. Five girls had become their OWN version of the Spice Girls and somehow managed to build a facebook group larger than every other Spice Girls fan group! Mind blown!
I’d say 99% of people in this group have no fucking clue who the Spice Girls are but these 5 girls have obviously heard a song or two and decided “We are now the Spice Girls!”.
This explained why no one in here had an actual clue who the Spice Girls were. But still, what was up with all the random Asian men photos? Did they wanna piece of the “Spice Girls”?
I asked my admin friend again to no reply. It would remain a mystery, although I’m guessing my initial thought was probably the case.
On that note, my brain was fried and I’d had enough for one day. I pray for any real Spice Girls fan who ends up joining this group unknowingly. It’s great if you want a ton of new whats-app contacts for random Asian men but, if you’re expecting a deep and meaningful chat about why ‘Bumper to Bumper’ was never a smash hit, you’ve come to the wrong place.
