After the absolutely amusing chaos that followed up from last week’s blog, around that same time there was another little rift that was brewing in the world of pop music. However, this rift actually kind of disheartened me, and made me further my dismay on the legions of horrible people that seem to follow the celebrity culture. If you had not had guessed, this was the unexpected rift between Miley Cyrus and Sinead O’Connor.
This all started when Miley Cyrus claimed that Sinead O’Connor was a major influence behind the idea and concept of her hit single ‘Wrecking Ball’.
So essentially, all has gotten off to a great start. Nothing wrong here, younger generations giving respect to the older generation.
In reply, Sinead O’Connor replies with an open letter to Miley Cyrus, which you can click on the link to see.
In this letter, Sinead compliments and acknowledges the fact that Miley sees her as a role model in the respects of a musical peer, but she also goes on to say that in the simplest of terms, that she needs to be extremely careful as the industry will do anything to exploit her at the height of her success and fame, and that she also implicates that she does not want Miley to go down the same route that she did in a manner of speaking.
In reply it so turns out that Miley very stupidly decided to post this… (keep in mind that Sinead’s Twitter posts were from a couple of years ago, in the midst of a nervous breakdown).
So in response to this most idiotic of messages, this is what Sinead replied with on her official Facebook page…
Back to Miley, she simply tweets with the following answer…
If you had not known before, in 1992 Sinead O’Connor was made quite infamous for ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘War’. She changed the lyrics of the song by switching the words ‘racism’ to ‘child abuse’. This was a protest against the recent findings of child abuse within the Roman Catholic church. Whilst ripping up the picture of the Pope, she sung the word ‘evil’. Of course, this pretty much pissed of most of America, and a lot more people over the world, and inevitably damaged her career in some minimal respects.
Anyway, so Sinead replies to Miley’s tweet with a third letter.
And so the saga continues. At the present time, there are still things being said left, right, and centre.
It has all become a rather sad state of affairs, as I believe that this one argument is enough to actually shatter the present day dignity of the expected female role model within the music business, and it is also another prime example of just how manipulative the music business can truly be, especially when it comes to female performers.
Over the course of the past few decades, we have seen the progressive liberation, freedom, and equal rights for women. Not just within the music industry, but all over the world in many different things. I mean there is still a LOT of things that still need to be addressed within the fairness of equal rights, but at this point in time within the music industry, exploitation seems to be one of the biggest cancers.
A part of me wonders if Miley personally sent those tweets, or was this pressure from her management and team at the record label? To be quite honest it would not surprise me if it was the latter. Lets face it… Miley Cyrus was once the biggest role model for the youth of America, even the world to some extent, with her character Hannah Montana. A clean cut role model of the highest degree, with much success all over the world.
Miley Cyrus… now growing up, the public has also seen her grow up within her ranks of the music industry and television. She is still at an age where she can be seen as impressionable towards music industry figures, so that of course is where the exploitation will come in. She is doing all of the things that are exactly the opposite representation of Hannah Montana.
I mean for fuck sake, look at Miley’s recent performance at the VMA’s with Robin Thicke. Possibly one of the most cringiest performance I have ever seen in my entire life. But understandably, all the internet meme’s followed this up on all scales and ranges. After all the flack she got after that performance, I actually felt really sorry for the girl. I genuinely did. All eyes on her, she being told what to do and how to do it. Following a tirade of embarrassment and abuse from the public, lets face it… her management have got her under the thumb. What is even worse… how the fuck does the legend and father himself Billy Ray Cyrus respond to it?! He justifies it as a creative advancement! REALLY?!
Also… has anyone seen the recent photoshoot Miley has done with Terry Richardson?? Looks like something from a dodgy porno in some kind of second rate hotel.
But after all this hustle and bustle with Sinead O’Connor, I do not care what the outcome will be. I have lost all initial respect for Miley Cyrus and a part of me has lost respect for the music industry in general, because of the whole underlying mockery of mental illnesses, and nitpicking at others because of the personal troubles they have had in the past.
This really fucking pissed me off, because not is it just an insult to Sinead O’Connor, Amanda Bynes, as well as all the families and individuals that have experienced mental illness, or had to endure it by helping those within their families or friends or occupants who do suffer from such things, but it is also a damaging blow to the state of the music industry as a whole.
I mean come the fuck on, seriously? Has it got to that point that in order to create controversy and to make money within management, PR companies and media, and for the sake of ‘artistic development’, that you have to bring up such horrible stuff about the troubles of individuals pasts, which they have so valiantly fought against in order to make their health better?
If you ask me I think this is just absolutely disgusting. In fact if this is the way that the media aspect of the music industry is heading, I would rather take an entire u-turn in my career rather than be involved in something so heartless and callous. Where the fuck has the principles of dignity, morality, and equality gone?
I personally hate the way that music industry figures exploit some female artists like Miley Cyrus. It fucking sucks. This is why some of the woman in the music industry I look up to are artists like Patti Smith, Joan Jett, Nina Simone (RIP), Cher, Annie Lennox, the ladies in Pussy Riot, Kathleen Hannah (RIP), and of course… Sinead O’Connor.
Ladies who stood for a purpose in order to change things, as well as the perception of what a female artist should be acknowledged as. They all proved their power through the art of their talents. But what they all realised is that they are all beautiful in their own way, and they do not even need to be exploited or sexualised in order to prove a point. More to the point, role models of the highest scale.
Also along the lines of Sinead O’Connor‘s past with the music industry, did you know that during the recording of Sinead’s debut album ‘The Lion & The Cobra’, her record label actually told her to have an abortion whilst she was pregnant, because she would not sell enough records, and that she would not generate enough money? FUCK CAPITALISM.
But of course I will wrap up with this with an open comment to Sinead O’Connor…
Unfortunately, it seems you have been a victim of a very cruel and intolerable music industry and society. Do not let these bastards get to you like they already have done in the past. Realise that you are actually so beautiful as an individual inside and out. We all have problems that we all deal with in life, but if any person can accept you for your flaws and not have the indecency to judge you, they are the ones that are worth keeping. Concentrate on what is important… you, your family, your health, and your career. I for one will not judge you, because in a world full of ignorance and judgment, there is a good portion of us that will stand by your side no matter what.
Stay beautiful.
JPM.
