YouTube has rapidly become one of the world’s most influential social media sites with budding musicians, comedians and vloggers all using it as a primary way to build their following. While the site is admittedly overcrowded with young talent fighting to be seen and heard, upcoming band Cahoots bring a fresh concept to the video platform.
They may look like your average trio but all three members were popular YouTube solo artists online before they’d even met for the first time. Now, British singers Tom Law (80,000 subscribers), Matt DeFreitas — often known as RollUpHills (77,000 Subscribers) and huge Spanish YouTuber Curricé (254,000 Subscribers) are set to takeover with their lighthearted pop tracks.
We caught up with the boys recently to find out more about life as part of a rising Youtube group.
HTF: You all met at a YouTube workshop last year. Why did you decide to join forces and create a band?
Cahoots: Basically we got on and thought it would be fun! Our current management were there and mentioned they’d like to work with an international band using YouTube, and we were like “Hey! That’s us!”
HTF: Do you think having a strong social media following is integral to succeeding in the music industry?
C: There are certainly exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, yes. Connecting and engaging with an audience is such a brilliant way to develop and sustain a following. We wouldn’t be where we are without social media.
HTF: With the band’s music tastes ranging from the likes of Eminem to Red Hot Chili Peppers, how did you find a sound you’re all happy with?
C: Although we all have different tastes in music, we do overlap heavily in certain areas. It’s actually kind of perfect, we have a shared vision for the band, but are all bringing our own personalities to the table!
HTF: Your upcoming single ‘No Money’ isn’t even out yet and already has over a million Youtube views. How does that feel?
C: Bloody brilliant! We’re incredibly lucky to have so many people supporting us and our music. Once again, without social media, we would never have been able to connect with this amount of people so early on in our career.
HTF: If you could collaborate with any Youtuber, who would you choose?
C: Pomplamoose! They’re an American musical duo with buckets full of talent. They also make really creative music videos too.
HTF: If you were only allowed to listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be?
C: Maroon 5‘s Songs About Jane, this is my favourite album ever (Tom) and I know the other boys love it too.
HTF: What do you consider the band’s greatest achievement to date?
C: Probably playing at Wembley Stadium for the Capital Summertime Ball! None of us had ever played a stadium before and it was an incredible feeling.
HTF: What can we expect from Cahoots in the next year?
C: More music, more videos, more gigs, more banter! Probably more tattoos on Curricé‘s arm as well…
