Butcher Babies Face the Jury

Welcome to the next instalment of Mosh’s Face the Jury. If you don’t know what to expect by now then let us explain. Each week we pick a random selection of tracks from the emails which we are sent. These tracks are then sent to a random selection of staff who let us know their thoughts.

Will they find their new favourite tracks or is it just scrapping the bottom of the musical barrel? It’s time to Face the Jury!

Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – Juggernaut

Santhi- Such an aggressive track it makes me want to break stuff, I love it. Even with Frank spitting that chorus in my face, I can’t help but find it very catchy/ anthemic. If anything, this is a man I wouldn’t want to mess with. 4/5

Andy- If someone told you that Frank Carter was getting back into hardcore music this is pretty much exactly what you would expect. It’s vicious, his good old north London accent is back in full force, and the breakdown makes you want to kick the shit out of everything in sight. Love it. 4/5

Brooke- The track has a really solid heavy beat, but as soon as the vocals kick in I’m squinting and looking for the volume button. Not my kinda thing, at all. But if you’re into loud, out of tune screaming, this is definitely your track. 1.5/5

Jonathan- Well to be honest, I think Frank Carter is definitely back on top form with this one. Juggernaut is gritty, aggressive and is a brief look into the animal that is waiting to unleash itself from within Frank Carter once again. Theirs a reference to ‘Gallows’ as well, which just fuels the flame for this song. It does get a bit repetitive but hey, it’s punk and it’s how it’s meant to be. Frank Carter is angry again, and that’s what we like. He’s an absolute beast and he will wreck you! 4/5

We Never Learned To Live – crystalline, so serene

Santhi- It’s right there in the title, the overall vibe is very serene. It makes me feel so content I just want to lounge around looking at the stars, especially in the last couple of minutes where it’s just instrumental. I didn’t expect there to be any screaming at all, but even then this feels very much like a lullaby to me. Definitely going to check out more from these guys now. 4/5

Andy- I happen to really like this album. The way this song builds up so gracefully into the huge wall of noise as he starts screaming is such a good example of how to create a gripping soundscape, and when it all drops back down it doesn’t sound empty, it makes you feel like you’ve just walked through a hurricane. 4/5

Brooke- The song starts off quite promising, but overall is a bit flat (sorry, not a big fan of slow post-hardcore tracks). It’s not a bad song though. The clean vocals are smooth and relaxing, and the unclean vocals aren’t bad as far as screams go. The track is a little dull though, and it really just doesn’t need to be 5 minutes long.  2.5/5

Jonathan- It’s definitely interesting and definitely has the right idea. I can hear exactly what they’re trying to achieve here. Almost post-rocky with a bit of violence added to it, which is great. However, they don’t quite achieve that ultimate goal or sound. Needs to be heavier, more violent and more energetic; Maybe not the vocalist, he actually has a great scream. It’s just the backing doesn’t quite match his presence. 2/5

Cute Cute Death – Pockets

Santhi- With a name like Cute Cute Death, how is this not an indie band? As far as the song goes, it’s fine but I feel like there are so many bands doing the whole post-hardcore thing that it doesn’t really stick out for me. 2.5/5

Andy- ‘Meh’talcore. Ignoring everything that is wrong with their name, there isn’t actually much wrong with the song, there just isn’t really anything that great about it. I felt like I’d head every bit of it before. 2/5

Brooke- The song has a catchy beat, some cool guitar riffs, and pretty good vocals, but it’s not exactly a groundbreaking track. It’s a very typical post-harcore song. But it’s quite surprising that the band are from Kingston considering they play a very American style of post-hardcore. 2.5/5

Jonathan- Full of energy and featuring a lead vocalist who has both strong clean and dirty vocals. I don’t hear too many post-hardcore bands trying to make their mark these days so it’s refreshing to hear this track. It’s full of energy great ideas but it does lack a little bit of musicality and at times, falls into the trap of following the same formulas as every other post-hardcore band that’s tried to make it and failed. 3/5

Butcher Babies – Monster Ball

Santhi- Okay I am well aware they’re lip syncing for the video, but I love the way these two girls are literally growling yet they still look so fabulous while singing. They are absolutely killing it! Also, it helps that the chorus is so infectious. I didn’t think I liked this at first yet I found myself repeating it and singing along? 3/5

Andy- Now, I actually quite like Butcher Babies. It doesn’t matter that every second of this has been done before, it’s good fun! The chorus sounds like Hatebreed, the riffs are definitely headbang worthy, and the nearly ambient bridge is actually good. 4/5

Brooke- I feel like someone has just asked me to do algebra. I’m so confused. This is quite possibly the weirdest, yet intriguing song I’ve heard. You don’t want to listen to it because it’s actually pretty terrible, but you can’t turn it off. But minus the terrible chorus, the unclean vocals are actually pretty spectacular. Those girls are hitting those high notes like a possessed Mariah Carey! 3/5

Jonathan- I opened this track without even looking at what it was so it caught me pretty off guard. As the video/band themselves show, I think it’s meant to be a bit weird and a bit mental and I love it. The chorus is rhythmic and actually distinguishes itself from the rest of the song without having to be melodic; it’s simple and catchy. The whole thing sounds like a bit of a show and I have a feeling it’s probably designed to be a live thing rather than a studio track. I would probably never listen to it or take this band seriously but it’s a pretty funny/awesome track to accidently open from my e-mails. “No, I can’t stop moving” to it. 4/5

Slow Riot – City of Culture

Santhi-  I started off taking quite a liking to this track as I’m a fan of the whole dirty garage vibe but somewhere along the line I couldn’t get myself to pay attention anymore. This song feels so long yet it’s well under four minutes. The reason being, it sounds quite static throughout – granted at one point things pick up for a second with heavier riffs but by that time I was already distractedly scrolling through social media on my phone. 2/5

Andy- Little bit boring to be honest. I liked the whole indie/punk thing they’ve got going on, but the verse just seemed to go on a bit too long, with nothing much really happening. The whole song just seemed to be build-up to something that never actually happened. 3/5

Brooke- Quite frankly, this song is a little boring. The melody isn’t terrible, but I just don’t think the vocals are strong enough to carry the track, or even bring any life to it. 1.5/5

Jonathan- This one’s pretty cool. It’s kinda creepy and very post-punky with a cool bass riff that is the foundation of the track. But there’s a problem… It really does drag a bit… It opens up a bit more at the end but that should have happened earlier in the track and given the rest of it more to talk about. The idea is great but they could have done so SO much more with the song! 2.5/5

Stroamata – Dollar

Santhi- Don’t really have much to say about this, I wouldn’t mind listening to it but wouldn’t willingly put it on myself. It’s very background music for me. 2/5

Santhi- Ooh female-fronted sleaze-rock! Cool! Much like the Cute Cute Death track this wasn’t really one I felt like I could get behind, although again this wasn’t offensively bad. Just quite unoriginal. 3/5

Brooke- I really don’t have anything constructive to say about this track. Just no. The vocalists’ oversung Lana Del Rey-esque vocals are just really quite annoying. 1/5

Jonathan- I instantly disliked the vocals as soon as they started. And I really tried to like them as well, giving the track a good few listens and then taking a break and listening to it again on a different day. But NOPE. Still really dislike the female lead voice. It’s not that she is singing out of tune or anything like that, it’s just somewhat irritating sounds like she’s trying too hard to sound different. I don’t know, I just don’t like it. She’s haunting but not in a “ooo, that was impressive” way, more just a “hmm, this needs to stop ‘cos it hurts me” kind of way. The guitar riff at the start is pretty cool but they’ve kind of gone for this noise rock thing but there’s not enough noise apart from the howling coming from the front of the band. 1/5
