Britain: Laughter Is Our Best Medicine / The Funniest YouTube Videos I Have Ever Seen

Everyone needs a little bit of laughter in their lives, right?

JPM-Column-LaughterGood afternoon all!

We are at that awkward point in between November and December. Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night have come and gone, with only Christmas around the corner. It is a depressing thought to many people that the year has flown by so quickly and that the tradition of Christmas is merely within a palms grasp. Traditionalists like myself, actually relish the thought of Christmas coming around, because I get to spend more time with my family. But understandably and sadly, others see it as the unnecessary time where they have to bury a hole in their debit card accounts to buy ‘loads of pointless rubbish’.

On a slightly off topic note, the only other notable day within this point of now and Christmas, is Remembrance Day on Sunday 11th November, which is also known as Armistice Day, or Poppy Day. This is a poignant and very important day which, I am sad to say, not a lot of younger people are not taking note of, and I encourage everyone to actually pay attention. This is a day which comes once a year, where we pay our respects and stop to observe the two minute silence for all our soldiers and families, who have been affected in all conflicts of war, mainly from the first two World Wars.

So if you have a spare moment, please go to the Royal British Legion Website and find out how you can help them provide charity and help to the veterans of our world wars, as well as the soldiers and families who are also severely in need. Alternatively, go to your local shop, and put some spare change towards such a noble cause and wear your poppy with pride.

But getting back on topic, I can understand that with so many different things coming up that we all feel the inclination, as a country, to be a general race of pessimistic and grumpy sods. But if there is one thing that we have, and that the rest of the world does not, is that we embrace sarcasm, not just as our favourite weapon, but also as one of our traits which goes so undetected that everyone else thinks we are being serious.

The British sense of humour is something special, and it is fair to say that comedy is one of our favourite escapisms. With all due respect to such individuals, it seems there is a vast percentage of Americans that actually do not comprehend and understand our sense of humour. But, the smaller percentage that can pick up on that actually favour our stone cold dry wit and sarcasm on every level.

So it made me think, as a country of underdogs, and where simpler things can at best of times make us happy, the main thing that does usually make us genuinely happy is laughter. I mean we all have our favourite past times like theatre, film, going to gigs and concerts, arts and crafts, etc, but nothing actually unites everyone more so than a good, old fashioned, rousing of comedy.

Laughter is our favourite medicine. If someone is having a bad day, is troubled by the every day stresses of life, has financial worry, personal troubles, we look to the all known temporary healer of all… laughter.

So with this in mind, I have decided to compile ten of my favourite and funniest YouTube clips that have provided me with a bloody good laugh. I have tried to avoid films and comedy programmes, and just fill it with amateur footage, and just generally independent made funny stuff. So if you are having a bit of a shit day, why not have a little ganders through this and have a few laughs on me! :)

1. STRAIGHT OUTTA CLACTON

Probably the most genius take on NWA’s classic ‘Straight Outta Compton’. Never in my life did I ever expect to see such a piece of comic genius come out of the confines of Essex, with some pretty amusing razor sharp sarcasm aimed at the (at the time) townie / pikey culture that was once at its peak. Classic!

2. SINGING CAT

Pretty simple and self-explanatory. A cat ‘singing’ along to Bob Seger’s ‘Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll’.

3. FLEA MARKET MONTGOMERY

This clip became a viral sensation a few years ago for the sole reason… this was not a piss take! This is actually a legitimate advertisement for this chap’s flea market somewhere in suburban America. The crazy thing is, it actually became an accidental comedy sensation, an unlikely karaoke hit, an internet meme, and also people actually made a dance to it as well! Brilliant!

4. PREACHER LAUGHS AT SINGING CALLER ON RELIGIOUS TALK SHOW

This is probably my most cherished funny video that I ever come across! So the whole principle of this video revolves around a televangelist show, where of course everyone talks about the Lord himself, and about preaching the good word of the long haired, and bearded one. However, one chap called in and decided to sing for the hosts. This had an adverse effect on the main preacher, which you will be able to tell by the tears and the laughter pain in his eyes.

5. EVERY TIME I DIE – HAIR BURNING

For those of you who do not know, Every Time I Die are a rock and roll band from the good ol’ USA. They make music that makes you want to drink a bottle of whiskey and get involved in a bar room brawl, just because it is a ‘gentlemanly sport’. But more importantly, they are some seriously funny motherfuckers who know how to have a great time! As expertly demonstrated in this video, tour bus boredom gets to the point that they decide to set their hair on fire.

6. CHRIS KAMARA FAILS TO SPOT A RED CARD ON GILLETTE SOCCER SATURDAY

I know many people who are not fans of football, but they all say that they still tune in to watch Gillette Soccer Saturday, because of how all the hosts seem to provide such a comic take on football. Essentially it is a bunch of men yelling at football games / screens we cannot see, and occasionally there is quite a lot of accidental humour that occurs. Probably the greatest moment in the blooper reel was when the dopey yet legendary footballer / pundit Chris Kamara failed to spot a sending off during a Portsmouth vs Blackburn game!

7. CALLER COMPLAINS ABOUT THE ROYAL WEDDING LIVE ON RADIO

There is a debate going on about the Royal Wedding on a British radio show, and one caller called Melvin from Milton Keynes decides to air his frustrations about the situation to the hosts and another caller who thinks the opposite of Melvin. Absolute hilarity ensues.

8. TECHNICAL DEATH METAL BAND ON AUSTRALIAN KIDS TV SHOW

I am still in absolute disbelief that this actually happened. Death metal band Blindfolded And Led To the Woods somehow made it on to Aussie national television, by performing on an early morning kids TV show called The Erin Simpson Show. What follows is one of the must surreal yet unbelievably hilarious 6 and a half minutes you will probably ever see in your entire lives..

9. DARTH VADER PLAYING THE BAGPIPES

There is another video of this somewhere online, but it was this video that really tickled me the most. An unsuspected public recording witnessing Darth Vader playing the bagpipes on a unicycle in the middle of the street, playing the Star Wars theme.

10. BIG ASS N***A ON A SCOOTER DRINKING CAPRI SUN

Self explanatory. One of the most highly bizarre and funny as fuck videos I have ever seen in my entire life. Enjoy!

Anyway, that is about it from me! Hope you enjoyed this slight amusement, and remember… this Sunday it is Remembrance Day. Wear your poppy with pride! And in the meantime, have a wicked weekend!
