Here’s How to Easily Transition Into the Summer Season With Fake Tan

Fake tan can be a minefield for newbies. Our beauty writer Madolyn shares her top tips for getting a sun-kissed glow in a flash.

As we are now well and truly into the summer months, it’s a good time to transition our beauty regimes, from makeup to hair products, body products to skincare. One of the main changes I like to make to my beauty routine when it comes to this time of year is an increase in fake tan.

In the run-up to summer, I apply fake tan sporadically, only using it if I have an event or a night out which means a have a bit of skin on show. However, as the weather warms up and our arms and legs are on show on a daily basis, fake tan becomes a part of my regular routine, to keep myself topped up with a healthy glow.

Prep is key when it comes to fake tanning – no one wants streaky or uneven tan lines! Before applying fake tan, try having a shower and using an exfoliating scrub to remove any dead skin cells, buffing the skin to an even finish. I like to shave my legs before applying any fake tan, again to ensure an even surface. If I am going to all the trouble of fake tanning to have my legs on show, after all, I also want them to be fuzz-free!

My personal preference is this razor from Friction Free Shaving, a monthly subscription service that delivers a razor handle and four heads straight to your door every month, ensuring that you have a fresh, clean blade for each week.

Fake Tan

Fake tan can be a bit of a minefield. There are so many brands offering so many different products, it can be difficult to know which ones to pick. Trial and error is often the best way to find out which is the best product for you, as the results may differ from person to person.

My usual everyday go-to fake tan is the Dove Summer Glow Gradual Tan. I love to apply this to my legs and arms every time I shower during the summer months. I love that this fake tan provides a gentle glow that slowly builds over time, providing a nice and even, natural sun-kissed tan. I also like to use the Dior Self Tanning Crème on my face. Again, this is a gradual tan that offers a very natural sun-kissed finish, and it’s great to apply a few times a week before bed.

If I want a more instant tan, the Soap and Glory Sun-Kissed Tint Body Lotion is a great option. This product soaks into the skin like a dream, meaning that you can get dressed pretty soon after application. It provides a really even tan with no streaks or patches, which is great for that last minute application.
