Five Ways to Wear: Velvet

It’s been transformed from a 90s throwback to a current-season hit. Here’s how to bring velvet into your day-to-day looks.

Written by Megan Horn

Before its huge comeback, velvet was more or less only seen in full-length hanging curtain form or classed as something that only 90s Scary Spice could pull off. It had always been just a little bit too decadent to be cool. However, with its new modern twist, velvet is the perfect in-between for winter and is sure to make you (just about) accept the cold weather. Here are five ways to incorporate it into your everyday outfits.

Shirts: The Casual Statement

A shirt is one way to make velvet the centrepiece of your outfit without looking OTT. Pair a blush pink velvet shirt (like the one pictured above) with light-wash jeans and delicate rose gold jewellery for a casual yet chic look that’s perfect for a lunch out with friends.

Trousers: The Runway Favourite

For the more experienced velvet wearers, a pair of velvet trousers is sure to get heads turning left, right and centre. When you need a break from skinny jeans and tailored trousers, make a statement with a brightly coloured wide-leg velvet number, coupled with a monochrome logo T-shirt, for an outfit that’s quirky but not hard on the eye.

Jackets: The Softer Rock Look

When you want a little edge, velvet is here to help. Bringing a touch of glam to jet-black skinny jeans and simple white T-shirts, the velvet jacket makes for a great alternative to leather. Keep things on the darker side with colours like charcoal grey, navy and black for the ultimate unconventional rock chic vibe.

Boots: The Step Back in Time

A velvet boot and acid-wash jeans with raw-edge hems will add a lil’ something seventies to an outfit. High-rise velvet ankle boots fit closely to the leg, so they work perfectly with slightly wide-leg trousers. Wear yours during the day to make a simple outfit anything but basic, or style them as part of a luxurious look to dress up an otherwise casual outfit for the night.

Bags: The Comfort Zone

The easiest way to incorporate velvet into your wardrobe is with a bag. Totes, clutches, backpacks, purses – a velvet bag doesn’t just take one form, and you can alter your look depending on the occasion. Style a cross-body bag with a longline trench coat and a neutral colour scheme to give the pop of velvet maximum wow-factor.
