We were sorry to see The First go, but luckily they didn’t leave without one final parting gift. Here’s our review of their last EP ‘Live Exist’.

It’s hard not to think about all the bands that seem to be calling it a day, especially since the dreaded announcements are making an appearance more than we’d like these days. Yet another band we lost earlier this month is Cambridge quartet The First. The band may not have embarked on a farewell tour, but they sure didn’t leave without offering fans one final parting gift in the form of their short but sweet EP Live Exist.

The EP only consists of three tracks and begins with the title track, coming in with the punch of a shrill guitar. It follows the formula of a typical pop rock tune; paced verses that lead into an explosive chorus with fitting lyrics: “Like statues, we’re standing tall; we will rise and fall.” The following track ‘Honestly’ almost sounds a little too similar to the previous track. The introduction features the distinct sound of a guitar that stands out before it continues to kick into a similar pattern tempo-wise.

The final track on the record is ‘Years’, and it’s a great “goodbye” at that. Melodically, it’s a great jam but looking a little closer into its lyrical content; it’s easy to tell that this track serves as closure not only for fans but also for the band. Showcasing fear of the impending change, but also acceptance of what’s to come. If The First had to choose their final song ever, we’re glad this was the one.
