As It Is – Southampton Joiners – 28/1/15 | Live Review

Calling a band ‘the next big thing’ is a bold move, but as Brighton based As It Is storm onto a dingy pub stage with a newly signed record deal, to a hurricane of politely wild girls, it’s clear they’re on to something big.

Calling a band ‘the next big thing’ is a bold move, but as Brighton based As It Is storm onto a dingy pub stage with a newly signed record deal, to a hurricane of politely wild girls, it’s clear they’re on to something big.

Equipped with a sugary sound that combines New Found Glory like choruses, with an All Time Low twang, the five-piece’s energetic blitz of pop punk, does more than satisfy the rooms cravings.

From the hard-hitting ‘Horoscopes’ to fan-favourite ‘Can’t Save Myself’, it’s promptly fast, annoying catchy and packed with engaging charisma that allows YouTuber turned vocalist Patty Walters to live out the decadent rock star dream. Reaching down into the crowd, the frontman maintains eye contract with the girls who are eagerly pushing towards the barrier, only to be met with a squeal of delight as iPhones and cameras shoot in the air.

The shrieks and yelps only get louder as the group soar into their latest single ‘Dial Tones’. A track that nurses the guilt of leaving behind someone you love to pursue your dreams. The punchy offering sees the crowd work together, belting verses out as if they’re auditioning for a part in the X Factor.

“That’s got to be the loudest it’s been on tour, thank you guys so much,” says Walters’, before springing into newer material such as ‘Sorry’ taken from their upcoming debut album.

Admittedly, at times the on stage clichés did get a little much. That being said, constantly thanking your fans isn’t always a bad thing. Particularly when it’s the fans that have made As It Is so successfully. Sure, success can come short and fast, but for this five-piece, it won’t be long until they wave goodbye to the small town venue circuit and embrace even bigger adventures.
