On day nine of this year’s iTunes Festival, excitement filled the air of London’s Roundhouse in anticipation for one of the world’s most popular singer songwriters of the moment  – Sam Smith.

Suitably dressed for the special occasion in a suave blue suit and crisp white shirt, Sam opened his set with an equally impressive rendition of album track ‘Nirvana’ – this being simply a warm up for what would be an exceptionally moving show. The venue’s superb acoustics placed Sam’s voice at the forefront – with every note throughout the set sounding pitch perfect.

Supported by his talented band and backing singers, this was a truly soulful affair. His live performance brings a whole new level of poignancy to his already emotional songs (Sam himself commented at one point that his “album is very very depressing”). A particular highlight was ‘Lay Me Down’, which turned the room almost completely silent as the crowd were seemingly in awe of his beautifully personal lyrics and powerful vocals; a true goose bumps moment. What’s perhaps most impressive about Smith is that his incredible tones and huge vocal range seems almost effortless.

A surprise in the set came as he performed latest single ‘I’m Not The Only One’ and US rapper A$AP Rocky joined him on stage. An unlikely pairing you might think, but it certainly brought a fresh sound to the track thanks to the combination of smooth lyrics and up-tempo rap. “That was sick right?” Sam exclaimed afterwards, reflecting the crowd’s thoughts.

The second half of the set was a more upbeat affair as he sung huge hits ‘Latch’, ‘Money On My Mind’ and ‘La La La’. There was even time for a funky cover of Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Do I Wanna Know?’, placing a new, motown twist on the record.

Aptly named ‘Stay With Me’ closed the show complete with huge audience sing-along. As he sung the last few notes of the number one single, Sam was hit with a never ending round of applause and huge cheers, leaving him looking truly gratified and appreciative of the reaction.

This performance proved exactly why Sam Smith has become the huge star that he has. His undeniable talent and endearing personality is a winning recipe that certainly blew everyone in the Roundhouse away.
