If you threw Young Guns into some sort of civil partnership with You Me At Six and Deaf Havana, you’d be met with London troop All She Wrote who, thankfully, bring us ‘Riven‘, a six track record that I am glad to have been given to check out this week.
‘Principio‘ opens in an ambient styled aura, almost a classical piece making for a nice ‘mood-setter’, you know the score, candles and all that shit with a bit of wine as the track dives and climbs into ‘Unjust‘. I almost expect there to be that annoying exhaled scream to go along with the music, but fortunately alas, in come some brilliant cleans from vocalist Connor Crooks, accessible and not too forced. A strong start to a pretty short record is vital and this band have got it on lock-down!
Title track ‘Riven‘ follows in a similar style, catchy, melodious, easy to listen to and inventive, all key to this genre of light melodic rock infused loosely with a sort of post-hardcore Emarosa sound as ‘Weathered‘ kicks in.
Concluder ‘Finis Principio‘ takes the form of an emotive seven minute piece, heartfelt without being horrendously cheesy and tedious, slowing down, dropping off the edge, eerie echoing vocal effects and piano sections, what more could you ask for in a concluding track from a band who have completely nailed it with this short, subtle and succinct record. I highly doubt that this will be the last that the music world will hear from All She Wrote.
