Fresh from remixing the massive ‘Forever‘, by Wolfang Gartner featuring Will.I.Am, the quarter of Moda that is Tom Staar unleashes his ‘Death Staar’ EP through the team’s Moda Music on the 7th November. Avid club followers will no doubt have been witness to Tom’s efforts in Ibiza and festivals throughout the UK this summer, and ‘Death Staar’ seems to be the next step en route to world domination.
The EP starts with the title track, which sees a collaboration with Spektre. The cut is an old-fashioned club banger, bringing together elements of house, disco and future electro, and it provides both the instant gratification required on the dancefloor with a sustainability which endures upon further listens. Certainly catchy, but sonically interesting as well. Continuing the space theme, ‘Galaxy’ starts with some low-slung click beats, before bringing the crowd’s hands up with an epic synth build. A slightly Afro-house feel to the continuing drums gives this one a summery flavour for the long winter nights to come. To round things off, ‘Weekenders’ gives you an electronic workout that brings a smile to the lips and a shake to the hips. The three tracks complement each other well, and definitely show off the quality of Tom’s production in abundance. My only slight gripe would be a little indistinctiveness between the tracks, but perhaps this will develop as Tom releases more material.
The ‘Death Staar’ EP will serve as both a good introduction to new listeners to Tom Staar, and a chance to see how he works outside of Moda. You may well have heard his tunes without knowing it, but with this release, I reckon that you’ll sit up and take notice.
