Even with the debut ‘Pilot’ EP still fresh in the ears of an ever-growing fanbase, Cambridgeshire lads Mallory Knox released their single ‘Death Rattle’ in the early hours of 6th August 2012.
The discreet edge of the band shines through even more so in the opening lines of ‘Death Rattle’: the voice of Mikey Chapman is strong, coherent and dulcet, combining perfectly with the fitting building of guitar chords before the track explodes into a tirade of melody, harmonious heaviness and brilliance.
It is fantastic how the vocals bring the music ‘up’ and by up I mean that musically: the band are relatively heavy but the soft yet sonorous singing only enhances the distinctiveness of Mallory Knox‘s sound.
Towards its unfortunate conclusion, ‘Death Rattle‘ erupts into a somewhat eerie set of gang vocals before hurling into a balls-out, heavy as anything riff that is the last thing that any listener would’ve expected to hear coming from a band such as Mallory Knox.
It sounds horrifically cliche to say but there really is ‘something for everyone’ in ‘Death Rattle‘. The heaviness, ominousness and uncertainty is only complemented by melody, direction and top-notch musicianship and perfomance.
It is completely pointless in me saying that Mallory Knox are almost certainly set to explode with the release of their upcoming record because anybody who has ever heard this band already know this.
