There is no way you could ever pin down The Bunny The Bear, you could love one track but hate another and in their most recent full length ‘Food Chain’ we promise there will be at least one track that will fit your bill. This is band that have taken every influence, every style and every sound from impulsive mish mashes into evolved, mature, developed tracks.
‘Cancer’ drops into this surrealist dream that oozes through layers of the versus of vocals whereas ‘Pale Green Eyes’ tears in opposing growls and electric beats, this album amalgamating every technique and genre possible. Then we come to ‘So Smooth, So Appealing’ that throws everything at us at once. The versus of screaming, growling and singing is a nostalgic sound that is wrapped in addictive electronics before throwing out spoken shouts. This ruptures the track into a beautiful spiral that descends till the end, if The Bunny The Bear are your kind of thing, then this track is going to blow your mind.
Oddly, next track ‘A Mothers Love’ uses children’s voices in an peculiar but reflective song before poppy ‘First Met You’ which reminds us of the tracks that filled MySpace back in the day with its catchy addictive tones, memorable words and infectious vocals. ‘High Tides And Swimming Conditions’ fits The Bunny The Bear’s perfectly, if slightly repetitive and cheesy by this point and it feels that although the band touch on many genres everything revolves around this synthy pattern, so although you may find a song you love, it may be because the rest sound so similar you stick to that one.
A neo-nostalgic mix that is a fresh sound but a repetitive one. As if the start of ‘Food Chain’ had us gripped and failed to hold on. An album for the niche, but if it’s your niche you’ll love it.
