This is Plymouth-based Brotherhood Of The Lake’s debut album, and by god, they’ve done a good job. If you’re looking for some epic slices of brutality, then you’ve come to the right place because ‘Desperation Is The English Way Vol. 1’ has ten tracks of sheer unadulterated bliss.
For a debut album, Brotherhood Of The Lake have really nailed it. The sound quality is fantastic and they have exactly the right balance between heavy riffs, brutal breakdowns and atmospheric moments. The intro to ‘Black Knives’ seems uncharacteristically mellow, but as you soon learn, it’s just the calm before the storm, because when it kicks in, it’s just as powerful as every other track on the album.
Highlights of the album are the glorious ‘Black Hearts’ and ‘The Desperation’, the latter of which BOTL have just released an incredible video for. The riffs are relentless, the vocals are strong, and if you don’t find yourself headbanging to this record then it’s safe to say your inner mosher is dead.
So basically, make sure you check out Brotherhood Of The Lake sooner rather than later: listen to their debut album, watch the video for ‘The Desperation’ and catch them on tour when they come to a venue near you. If you don’t, you’ll regret it.
