Purgatory hardcore ruffians Breaking Point come out heavier, stronger and even more tough-guy than before with their newest record ‘Life Sentence‘.
Armed with marker pen crosses on the backs of hands, clean living morals and chugging riffs, ‘Life Sentence‘ opens with the relentless ‘No Good Deed (Goes Unpunished)‘: the strength and anger that carry this track are more than enough to ensue that kind of ‘sitting at your desk tosser’ head-bang session. At only 1:50 in length, this track manages to fit all the riffs into it before fading out with screeching feedback, enough to make your ears hurt even if you’re a fan of high volumes.
‘Life Sentence‘ is up next and takes the extremely worthy crown of title track. The opening riffs of the track are a reminder of thoroughly decent hardcore especially with regards to the British take on the genre. Slowing down the tempo towards the end of the track (breaking down a breakdown, if you will), the listener is reminded of the musicianship that has gone into building this record and although hardcore is not technically dazzling, it does not need to be as the music speaks for itself in a bruising kind of fashion.
‘I Reach Out‘ follows a similar vein to the previous two tracks: the vocals are desperate and preaching, the riffs are tearing, colossal and drop like an anvil on your genitals and it flows perfectly into the concluder, ‘Overshadowed‘, an absolute rager of a track which brings a short but far from sweet banger of a record to a more than satisfactory close.
I would definitely make the effort to go and pick up this record from the Purgatory store if you are yet to hear Breaking Point but are a fan of bands such as Brutality Will Prevail, Broken Teeth and Hang The Bastard. If you are disappointed by ‘Life Sentence‘, you’re lying.
