Electro-metal team Attack Attack! have took a different direction with their new album, focusing more on the heavy tunes and less on the synthy samples. Hopefully this new lease of life will rid the band of their signiture and mocked phase of ‘crab-core’- some would argue not a good move. However, it still hasn’t seemed to hit the spot. Instead of getting rid of their past, they just seem to be attempting a ‘man-up’ session by turning a lot heavier. Brutal is not always the way forward.
Saying this, it’s clear how ‘This Means War’ can definitely gain back some respect and acknowledgement. Track ‘The Revolution’ with it’s heavy drops is a great representation of the updated sound, as is ‘The Family’, which will soon get head’s banging about. There’s a whole load of great guitar harmonics and melody, fitting well with the range of vocal styles.
The band still show traits of their old self, with a few electro beats and some soaring clean vocals, but it will take some getting used to. Listen with an open mind, and consider it a ‘marmite album’. Also, ignore the fact that the front cover resembles two weird veiny penis’s instead of arms…
