Quiet Quiet Band – Low Noon | Album Review

Quiet Quiet Band’s debut album is weird; but it’s just the right amount of weird that it’s good. Their music gives a whole new face to folk rock all the while giving us a good chuckle while they’re at it.

Upon hearing that Quiet Quiet Band are an alt-folk band, we feared what we would find are banjo-playing Mumford and Sons wannabes. Luckily, that wasn’t what we came across. The irony of Quiet Quiet Band is despite inserting the word “quiet” into their name twice, they are anything but. The London based sextet are no doubt heavily folk influenced but they bring in an element of punk that creates a unique combination we don’t come across too often. The band’s upcoming debut album Low Noon is released on 9th March.

From what we can tell of the band’s existing videos, this is a whacky bunch of guys and that translates so clearly in the sound. These songs are weird, but weird enough that it’s good. Track four ‘Fudge (Highly Poisoned)’ even left us having a nice chuckle – between the chaotic hoedown feel and voicing lyrics like: “Don’t worry about the smell of meat, I’ve just been to the butchers.” The best part however, comes with the tracks end; where shrill shrieks precede the handlebar-mustache sporting frontman Tom Purcell yelling at you to “Get away from that door.” Confused? So are we.

The fascinating things is all these songs tend to tell some sort of unique story. Take new single ‘Bunks’, which tells of the hardships of life at sea. Our first impression of Quiet Quiet Band is that they’re all about the fun. This isn’t the type of band you would listen to religiously but they sound like they would be an absolute laugh to see live. If you want to hear a few tracks, we highly recommend ‘Hunter’s Moon’ and ‘Flatlands’.
