New Jersey’s Palisades make a return with their third full-length album on January 20th. Based on some of the band’s previous, we must admit there was some skepticism going into listening to the record, but the band’s self-titled record shows Palisades in a new light. Reinventing oneself three albums down the line seems like a risky step to take, but once you hear the band’s new album it quickly proves how this was exactly the right choice.

Thematically, there is an obvious shift from the party-centred lyrics we are used to from the band. Presenting themselves in bare-boned form, this album seems to showcase a more genuine side to the band. Ironically, what feels like Palisades at their most genuine also seems feels a little more accessible. With perfectly polished melodies, it fits right at home with the roster at Rise Records (who are releasing the band’s new album), as we see fans of likes of PVRIS and Issues particularly taking an interest.

As with any band who are just discovering their sound, or in Palisades‘ case re-discovering their sound, there is some clear back and forth between where it is they want to go. Certain tracks like opener ‘Aggression’, as the name so aptly suggests, shows no trace of the heavy electronic/ EDM influence the band previously had. While it does make an appearance here and there, what Palisades has presented us with is a clean slate and quite frankly, a fun-loving rock record. If this is where Palisades is heading, we’re definitely curious to see what’s next.
