Having recently won Best Video at the Kerrang Awards for their track ‘Angel Eyes’ it appeared a few people out there were a bit confused as to who New Years Day even were. What some of you may not know is the band have actually been around for over 10 years now but, they are a far cry from their humble beginnings. With only one original member, a totally different sound and lead vocalist Ashley Costello transforming from cute nerdy girl to emo scream goddess, New Years Day may as well be a new band altogether.

Catching them at this years Download Festival really did show though why people should start paying attention. Storming through a set-list mainly of material from their recent album Victim to Villan and EP Epidemic, NYD brought a high energy performance that really put in to perspective the years of work this band have put in.

Ashley Costello’s stage presence. along with her vocal ability, have gone from strength to strength over the years and she took hold of today’s Jake’s Stage crowd and never let go. The bands performance was flawless from start to finish and it almost felt wrong them being on such a small stage. With the popularity of bands like Motionless In White, Fearless Vampire Killers and even still My Chemical Romance, New Years Day are the perfect band to slot within that group and bring some well needed female attitude to the bunch. If you don’t know who they are yet then trust me, you soon will!
