‘Rectify‘ is a four-track offering from up-and-coming singer-songwriter Hannah Trigwell. Beginning her career busking in her hometown of Leeds, Hannah has gained a loyal following by posting covers on Youtube. ‘Rectify’ is her third EP and begins with ‘Hurricane‘, which currently stands at 110,000 views on Youtube. With an soulful-electro feel, it draws comparisons to artists such as Michelle Branch. With quite a simple yet catchy chorus, it is a great opening track.
Next up is the EP’s title track ‘Rectify‘, which feels instantly edgier with a plucky intro guitar riff. Trigwell’s voice sounds beautiful and almost hypnotic, however the song has an opportunity to build, yet remains monotonous. Once again, a simple chorus could be enough to keep listeners humming along (“I keep holdin’ on, holdin’ on, holdin’ on“) but it seems a little misplaced as a title track. “Hearts on Fire” showcases Trigwell’s voice perfectly, with just a single guitar backing her throughout the first half of the song. Eerie echos give a euphoric, electro vibe – the song is easily the best on the EP. It’s calming, understated and is sure to regain some momentum potential lost by the previous track.
The EP ends on a high in the form of ‘Tightrope‘. Picking up the pace, the track is probably the most commercial out of the four. Trigwell’s falcettos are breathtaking and is backed with a beat that you could imagine remixed and pumped through the speakers of a crowded nightclub.
Overall its a really promising beginning for Hannah. Although each song varies slightly, her musical direction is so clear and the emotion in her voice is authentic and refreshing. There is no doubt that she will have a bright future ahead of her! ‘Rectify’ is available to download NOW.
