Since appearing in 2012 with his debut album Pluto, American hiphop artist Future continues to stay on his grind with collaborations with artists such as Miley Cyrus, Ciara and Rick Ross. He has only been around for 2 years and is already making a name for himself.
It seems like the Atlanta rapper (real name Nayvadius Cash) did not receive the memo on how washed up auto tune is though. It’s very unclear why Future feels the need to computerise his voice. Listening to Honest, sometimes it feels like one extended auto tuned mixtape.
Songs such as ‘My Momma’ sound similar to previous music we’ve heard from the rapper. This song will have you fist pumping in the club screaming “My momma ain’t raise no hoe” however the track lacks diversification. ‘Covered in Money’ produced by Sonny Digital has an impressive beat but again lacks creativity. Next comes ‘Never Satisfied’, the length of song is too short. Even though Drake features, the song fails to please. ‘Move That Dope’ is a definite club banger. Pusha T and Pharrell feature and deliver well on the track, but it doesn’t reach its full potential, the autotune kills the momentum.
The album begins with ‘Look Ahead’ which features Santigold. With both Santigold’s tone and Future’s, they produce a very unique sound. One of the treats on the album is ‘I Won’ featuring Kanye West. Both rappers rap about their fiancées. We see a more vulnerable side to Future as he sings “I won me a trophy”. Kanye does what he does best and that is being himself on the track. Future showcases his feelings again in ‘I Be U’ his cool, soft, sexy voice plus his infamous murmurs complements the R&B flavoured beat. The soft melody of ‘I’ll Be Yours’‘ sends chills down your spine. He effortlessly declares his love to his woman as he sings “my word that I’ll be yours”. These tracks work a lot better as your able to connect emotionally and it strays away from what Future usually produces.
Future enlists Andre 3000 on ‘Benz Friends’. The song is catchy and will get you nodding your head as you drive down the highway. Andre 3000 successfully adds his personality to the song. Future dips into a reggae stage at the end of the track which awakens the song but he does this a little too late. ‘Big Rube Speaks’ has no instrumental, just words with heart filled emotions followed by ‘Side Effects’ which is the opposite and has no substance whatsoever. The album ends with ‘Sh!t’ and ‘Karate Chop (Remix)’. He brings his Atlanta aroma to the track. It makes you feel like you’re in a Bugatti with him. The album is brought to a close with Lil Wayne’s drowsy voice.
Future knows how to make club bangers but unfortunately he’s the new T-Pain of our generation. On some tracks he is successful and then on the other hand it’s just plain old boring. He lacks vocabulary, all he does is repeats words which makes it seem that, despite the sixteen tracks, no effort was put in. The album has a decent amount of club hits but this album will never be a classic.
