Risks & Rewards is the new EP from Charlotte, North Carolina’s Falling Through April, a band who are one album deep into their career with 2012’s Take Flight. That album showed a band in their infancy, but offered a selection of solid, mid-paced melodic rock tunes, and Risks & Rewards doesn’t change the formula too much. What Falling Through April have done, however, is raised the bar a little. This is helped by some really tight production, which puts every instrument right in your face. The band help bring more energy too, the drums in opening trackBreakdown have an urgency that draws you in from the start.

Frontman Matt Carlson’s vocals are a highlight. The band’s facebook profile references ‘the most intriguing sound of Rock and Alternative music from the 90’s through today’ – and it’s easy to see why. Carlson’s voice could sit there with the best of them when he’s belting out a chorus, while in it’s quieter moments he doesn’t sound dissimilar to Placebo’s Brian Molko. Falling Through April recently toured with The Pretty Reckless, and it’s easy to see how they fit into that modern radio rock scene.

It’s not all good news, though. Despite the decent vocal performances, the lyrics leave a lot to be desired in parts. Thankfully they’re delivered with such conviction that you don’t quite notice them the first or second time round, but on closer listens there are some real clangers there. The band sound incredibly tight, but they don’t really bring anything new to the table musically. A lot of the tracks reminds you a little of something you’ve heard before. It doesn’t take away from the fact that there’s a lot of good hooks here, though. Some of these tracks are real growers that you’ll find yourself humming for days.

Falling Through April prove themselves to be a band that are quickly honing their craft while releasing some pretty good songs in the process. If there’s a full length in the works, it might be worth looking out for, but this should keep fans satiated for now.
