In an industry where bands are constantly being vacuum packed into styles and genre’s that they didn’t quite bargain for, this fiercely passionate three-piece are standing strong behind the message that accompanies this EP, stating that you really can be whatever the hell you want to be. Guitarist and Vocalist Paul Chalos has always chosen to express himself through his frustrations and shortcomings, this ultimately dictating the outcome and sound of his songwriting.
These emotional propellers have really driven this record to success. ‘The Eighth Gate’ resounds through our speakers with both intensity and delicacy. The walking pace of this introduction track eases us in gently but then erupts at just one minute in: summarizing the band and their unique style perfectly. ‘Orion’ plays out similarities from the previous track as it gently introduces us to a melodic spin on their post-hardcore approach to a ballad. Instrumentally this track is a lot stronger than the vocals, however it’s in the vocals that we are exposed to the emotion in the lyrics, making us feel like we’re truly connected to Chalos.
‘Space and Interaction’ features the delightful tones and harmonies of Angela Plake. The beautiful female vocals that back this track as well as take over an equal half of the song make it one of our favourites. The dynamic between the two contrasting vocals works exceptionally well. While we’re on the topic of dynamics ‘Beauty Is In The Eyes Of The Imperfect’ chimes in as the most energetic song on this EP, charging head first into the hardcore elements but then seamlessly retreating back into a far more sombre state. We’re also treated to another blast of Miss Plake’s breathtaking harmonies in the backing vocals, giving this penultimate track a little extra zest.
Leading us out is the ending track ‘Pegasus.’ At just over five minutes it’s the longest track on the EP but as a predominantly instrumental song, this time was wisely spent incorporating a euphoric summary of not only the band as a whole but this EP.
We thoroughly enjoyed this and truly hope to see them over on this side of the pond very soon.
