Nothing is better than a classic British rock band, and with CJ Wildheart returning onto the scene with his latest solo album, Mable, the 47 year old shows us kids what makes the perfect rock album.
Opening with an intergalactic introduction, the first track ‘Better Late than Never’, is both catchy yet loveably cheesy at the same time. With lyrics such as “shout it, love the way you’re feeling” and the synths going wild in the background, it’s not hard to imagine this being performed at an early 2000’s roof top party back when Nickleback was considered good.
However, the second track, ‘Down the drain’, changes the mood of the entire album. With more of a Green Day meets Queen of the Stone Age sound to it, the rest of the songs are filled with fewer synth solos and more guitar shreds. Wildheart’s wispy classic rock voice is backed with numerous gang vocals, bringing these two modern influences in full circle with the British punk style of cocky and straight up honest lyrics about how, if you’re not careful, the world is going to make a fool of you.
With its memorable choruses and punchy lyrics, Mable, promises to be one of the most diverse albums to come out this year. Whilst it sits on a fine line between old school rock (imagine Bon Jovi’s ‘Living on a prayer’) and punk meets stoner rock, CJ’s comeback will make him stand out from everything else we expect to hear in the next year. Oh and the best part you ask? You’ll still be humming every song long after the album finishes.
