For the three bands who preceded Cancer Bats, Reading’s Sub 89 felt a little lackluster. Perhaps metalheads don’t like going out on Tuesday’s, or maybe everyone’s dry January has caused them to crawl into a nocturnal black hole. Fortunately when the lights dim and Liam Cormier and his bandmates bound onto stage the place inflates. Unsure where 75% of the crowd came from, it was refreshing to see the venue swell with excitement.
It seems the punters were all sat down conserving energy, because when ‘True Zero’ kicks in, arms and legs go flying and the ferocity of the riffs exuding from the band fires up the crowd. The sheer amount of noise which comes from the four Canadian’s is astonishing, and Liam rules all with the energy that every frontman should have. With a decades worth of material the band own the stage like few others can manage.
As if an auto pilot button had been pushed the audience scream back each word of the bands quick fire set and all hell is let lose in the pit. With tracks ranging from 2010’s ‘Lucifer’s Rocking Chair’ to their cover of Beastie Boys ‘Sabotage’ and closer ‘Satellites’ from latest album Searching for Zero, tonight is a non stop ride of energy with no one stopping for breath.
For a band who introduce themselves as the ‘Motherfucking Cancer Bats’ and play with the level of heaviness that they do it’s lovely to see their softer side. For those in the crowd who didn’t already know the band are raising money for The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, and to show their support Liam is going to shave his hair off at the end of tour. As he throws his head around and whips his sweaty hair into everyones faces we’re sure that he will miss it, true testament to the bands feelings towards such a worthy cause.[/tps_header]
