The Cavern Club in Exeter will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to a fire that took place on Tuesday night.
City centre roads were closed to traffic as the Devonshire fire service fought the blaze until just after 2am on Wednesday morning. The alarm was called at around 10pm Tuesday when smoke was seen billowing out onto Queen Street.
The Cavern Club opened in 1991 and is well known to the world as one of the UK’s best independent venues. The club had fortunately been closed to the public at the time of the fire due to redecoration work.
Club co-owner Dave Goodchild stated that the owners have not yet seen the full extent of the damage, and so do not yet know how long the popular music venue will remain closed. He did confirm that it is likely to be several weeks.
