Grime and classical music are not normally two genres that share the same space but BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Sian Anderson has made this a reality. Please welcome, The Grime Orchestra!
As part of her Wednesday night show, Sian invited six MC’s from her Next Generation Shout down to Maida Vale studios to spit bars over some well-known grime classics alongside a live orchestra.
Jammz & Mic Ty spat over the legendary ‘Eskimo’ beat, Janset & Jevon took on ‘P’s and Q’s’, Mez & AJ Tracey ‘Mic Check’, Merky Ace ‘Woo Riddim’ and grime legend Jammer finished off with Ruff Sqwad’s ‘Functions On The Low’.
And the best thing is, if this has got you excited then just wait until the BBC Proms where the whole thing goes next level again. August will see some of grime’s heavyweights perform at the Royal Albert Hall with the Grime Symphony. Wretch 32, Stormzy, Krept & Konan, Lethal Bizzle, Little Simz and Chip are all scheduled to appear and this promises to be one event not to be missed.
