Last month saw the anniversary of the passing of one of hip-hops greatest ever producers. J. Dilla was already a true hip-hop legend before he passed in 2006 of a rare blood disease, his passing at the young age of 32 just cemented this. He was an eccentric producer and can be viewed as a visionary within the realms of music, especially with his concentrations on that beautiful boom-bap. He worked alongside and even influenced some of the most renowned names in hip-hop including; Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Pharcyde and of course his own group, Slum Village. His beats are still being used today by artists such as Joey Bada$$ and Kendrick Lamar. In two days time there is a tribute show to the great man in New York, headlined by Talib Kweli and hosted by A Tribe Called Quest’s Jarobi White, which promises to be a moving and inspirational occasion.
De La Soul, who are famous for bringing together jazz and hip-hop so brilliantly worked closely with J. Dilla. They are also joining in on this international tribute movement to him with a dedication mixtape which is being released next week on 26th March, titled ‘Smell The D.A.I.S.Y.’. Before then they have dropped another track off the tape, ‘Vocabulary Spills’ which as like all the tracks off the tape, it is produced by Dilla. Check out the track below and take a minute to pay tribute to one of hip-hops greatest.
