On the evening of March 23, Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, was found dead on a sofa in his Richmond home by a roommate. Initially, no cause of death had been announced or even speculated, but now police are investigating it as a drug-related death.
WTVR News out of Richmond broke the news. According to law enforcement sources, based on evidence gathered at the house, Brockie’s death is being investigated as drug-related, which includes a toxicology report that can take six or more weeks to process. The state Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
GWAR has overcome their share of losing members tragically where one of the bands previous guitarists, Cory Smoot, died suddenly while on tour in November 2011. The North Dakota medical examiner later determined the 34-year-old died from heart failure due to pre-existing coronary artery disease.
Brockie founded the group in the 1980‘s along with fellow VCU art students. GWAR gained international fame for its brand of heavy metal music and outrageous stage show. Brockie also appeared as a contributor on Fox News Channel. GWAR-B-Q scheduled for August 16th.
It is unclear if the band will continue after Brockie’s passing.
