At the South date of Slam Dunk Festival 2014, we at HTF had a sit down with siblings Becca MacIntyre (vocals) and Sam MacIntyre (guitar) from the West Yorkshire math rock five-piece, aka Marmozets. We spoke about their jam-packed future, how guitars are good for ripping fans’ hair out and the possibility of foot massage in the Press Room.
HTF: Hey guys, how are you doing today?
S: Awesome, thank you.
B: Ready for Day 2 of Slam Dunk, just got here.
HTF: How did yesterday go?
B: Amazing. We did not expect the turn out that we had. There were kids queuing to get in and they had to shut the doors. Yeah it just kicked off big time. We had fun, it was brilliant.
S: I ripped a girl’s weave out my accident with my guitar.
B: Yeah he took a girl’s extension out with his guitar ‘cos he went into the crowd and when he got back onstage he had this extension hanging off the top. Sam embarrassed the poor girl!
S: I didn’t mean to! I asked if it was hers!
B: You were like “Who’s is this? Who’s is this?” and she didn’t want to say it was hers. But she got it back.
S: Oh did she get it back? Aw bless her.
HTF: As you’re from up North, are you expecting that yesterday (in Leeds) will be your best turnout for this year’s Slam Dunk weekend?
B: I don’t know, because we haven’t played Leeds for like 2 years. So that was really special for us because, we’ve been touring everywhere else in the country and we’re starting adventuring and going out to Europe and America. It was nice to just play somewhere and call it home. I dunno, I love it here [Hatfield] and I think this venue’s brilliant and the sun’s out today. It was raining yesterday and it was all miserable. so today I think it’s gonna be even better ‘cos the sun’s out.
HTF: So you’ve recently released single ‘Why Do You Hate Me?’, but how has the reception been?
B: Incredible.
S: Awesome; lots of people are digging it, lots of radio playing, lots of airtime on TV.
B: But it’s when you play it live and everyone goes mental, it’s like Yeeeeah!
HTF: And how did filming for ‘Captivate You’’s music video go the other day?
B: Yeah that was two days ago, it was amazing. But we were pretty tired yesterday because we didn’t get much sleep. We didn’t stop filming until like 1.30am! But yeah it went really good and we’re excited to see what it’s going to look like.
S: It’s really different. There’s no live performance – it’s quite arty.
B: It’s more of a story: it’s weird, it’s arty and wonderful.
HTF: If you could sell any merch item with ‘Marmozets’ on it, what would it be?
B: Ooh, so many ideas. We could do our own hip flask? It would be cool to bring out our own beer! Other bands have done it, I think Metallica have one?
S: Iron Maiden have one.
B: Iron Maiden, that’s it! And it’s done amazing and apparently it tastes really good as well.
HTF: You’ve got a pretty busy summer ahead of you: Download, Reading/Leeds, Warped Tour. That must be an incredible feeling for you, right?
B: We’ve got some European festivals as well. We’re just excited, like this [Slam Dunk] is the beginning of it. I love the festival season. And we get to be in the proper sun in America – it’s gonna be beautiful!
HTF: And you’ve also announced your signing to Roadrunner which must be exciting.
B: Yeah! We’ll be part of an incredible team.
HTF: So, we’re going to end with some quick-fire word association. Go!
HTF: Car…
S: No… I don’t have one.
B: We don’t drive.
S: None.
HTF: G…
B: Star Raw.
S: G?
B: Roaaar!
S: I know what you’re thinking of, but I’m not gonna say it.
B: Get the Gs out!
S: Yeah!
HTF: Foot…
B: Massage! Would you like to give me one?
HTF: Yeah…maybe afterwards?
B: Really? It would be funny if you just went “No.”
S: I thought Footloose straight away…though I’ve never seen it.
HTF: The best band in the world…
Both: Us.
HTF: We were hoping you’d say that.
B: It’s true though.
