Deez Nuts are a self proclaimed ‘party hardcore’ band from Melbourne, Australia. When I Killed The Prom Queen broke up for the first time in 2005 founding member JJ Peters went on to form Deez Nuts to kill his time.
Now six years later Deez Nuts are still going strong and have just released their third full length album ‘Bout It’. We caught up with the band around it’s release date. Check out what happened right here.
HTF: How are you?
JJ Peters: I’m amazing thanks, just returned from our south east Asia tour and I’m making the most of what little time of we have home before were on the road for the better part of the rest of the year. We’ll be hitting a bunch of countries to promote the new albums so I’m psyched about that.
HTF: Being based in Australia do you find English crowds very different from back home?
JJ: It‘s actually probably the most similar to us compared when compared to mainland Europe, USA, Asia etc. i feel really at home there and playing to UK crowds.
HTF: You’ve supported loads of great bands in the UK. Do you have a particular favourite tour?
JJ: Man, we’ve done so many amazing tours there its a hard question. but in recent times, the The Architects UK tour at the end of last year was easily one of my favourite tours we’ve been a part of. We love those dudes to death and all the shows were dope so we were so happy we got to be a part of it.
HTF: Do you find the weather difficult to handle when you come over here?
JJ: Haha nah not so much, I mean it can be a little miserable at times but to be honest I enjoy the colas and the rain and rigging up. i feel more comfortable in those conditions then sweltering heat, especially for playing shows.
HTF: Your brand new album ’bout it’ just came out in the UK. Are you nervous about the release?
JJ: No I’m not nervous at all, not in a cocky way but we are really proud of it and are pretty confident its the best DN album to date so whatever happens happens, were already happy. but having said that we’ve had a tonne of positive feedback from all over so were chilling.
HTF: This will mark your third full length album. Would you say it’s the one you’re most proud of?
JJ: yeah most definitely, and its also the ever DN album writing and recording as a band rather me writing and recording everything myself so it was a completely different process and resulted in a better sound in my opinion.
HTF: You’ve always said your songs are light hearted and look on the ‘lighter side of things’. Is this the case with ’bout it’ or have Deez nuts finally gone ‘serious’?
JJ: nah its still very much a DN album, but much like other DN albums apart from being all tongue in cheek i like to use my position to express messages as well as just party anthems. There’s a couple of pissed off songs, an animal rights song, a song to thank the fans who support us…. but there’s still a general theme of “party and bullshit” haha.
HTF: ‘Bout it’ is the first album to not be produced DIY style now you’re signed with century media. Do you think this has changed the style/production of your music?
JJ: Not at all, its very much the same process as its been in the past just with different people and CM did request that it was all our doing. i always was the main producer before and just worked with Roman Koster to engineer and mix. this time round we still produced but had Shane Frisby at “the brick hit house” in cape cod engineer and Mike Rutcho mix it. So we still are in the drivers seat musically, its just a step up sound wise because were working with people at the top of their game.
HTF: Do you have any plans to come to the UK on a headline tour?
JJ: it looks like we’ll be doing a few smaller shows in the UK around our summer mainland Europe festival run, but we’ll be back for an extensive UK album launch tour later in the year. Can’t wait!
HTF: Finally what does the rest of 2013 hold in store for Deez nuts?
JJ: A tonne of touring, NZ, Russia, European summer festivals, Australia, Canada, south east Asia, Canada, Europe/UK, eastern Europe as well as starting to write our next album. Should be an exiting year!
