American duo Tyler N Stevie are currently in the UK promoting their current EP ‘Ghost’ which was released last month.
Tyler Reid and Stevie G met in high school, bonding over their love for performing arts and later went on to upload their song covers and mash-ups on YouTube where they have racked up a huge following.
Dubbed as the US version of the Rizzle Kicks, we had the lovely pleasure of catching up with Tyler N Stevie to discuss their UK tour, their new EP and their future plans.
HTF: Hey guys! How are you both?
Both: Hey! We’re very good thanks!
HTF: How’s the UK been treating you?
Tyler: Yeah the UK’s been really cool! We really love it here! We’ve been over here on a school tour which went really well!
HTF: What was that like, did you have a favourite school?
Tyler: It was great and you know I don’t think I can pick just one! Every school we performed at had such a great energy and seemed to really like us!
HTF: Is there anything in particular that you love about the UK?
Stevie: I think it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world, I really like the architecture of the buildings, and the weather’s not too bad!
HTF: It’s pretty miserable today though!
Stevie: True, it’s awful!
HTF: But you guys are a long way from home though, what are you missing the most about America?
Stevie: The cheeseburgers! Haven’t had a good cheeseburger in a while! But I miss my friends and I miss being able to drive.
HTF: Last month you guys released your 4 track EP ‘Ghost’ and they’re all original tracks written by you guys, where do you get your inspiration from?
Stevie: I don’t really know, I guess some things just speak to me in a way and I put it into words.
Tyler: I just draw from things that have happened to me in my life, you know experiences and stories. I’m a big believer music has to be authentic so I just try to write from the heart. Unless I’m trying to be light-hearted, in which case I just write about something happy!
HTF: What’s the response been like towards the EP from the fans?
Tyler: Well we have the best fans in the world! Our fans really love us, and you know we love them! They’ve been supportive even since our first YouTube video and you know even if we play a show and people don’t know who we are, the response is still normally really positive!
HTF: Speaking of your fans, you have a lot of dedicated fans behind you, which you call ‘Stylers’ – what’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done?
Tyler: Some girl came from France to meet us which was pretty cool!
HTF: Wow that is crazy and very dedicated! Now do you have a favourite song from the EP?
Tyler: Probably ‘You Had Me At Hello’ just because we’ve been playing it on our tour a lot!
HTF: That’s our favourite as well! On your YouTube channel you uploaded a video of you guys performing it on the tube in London last year – what was that like?!
Tyler: I was nervous! But it turned out pretty good actually after the first couple of notes! The reaction was more positive then we were expecting!
HTF: Now you started off with you covers and mash-ups on YouTube – where you have a huge following – are you guys concentrating more on original material now rather than covers?
Tyler: Well yeah, because it’s a lot more fun performing our own music. We want to move forward and put out an original album.
HTF: And are we right in thinking that you guys are currently working on a debut album? How’s that coming along?
Tyler: Yeah we’ve been in the studio, writing and recording to get to the goal of producing 10 or 12 songs that we’re really really proud of! So keep your eyes open for that!
HTF: Is there anyone you would really love to collaborate with?
Stevie: I’d love to do a song with Big Sean! I think that would be cool!
HTF: Well all the best with everything and thank you for chatting to us today, lastly what’s in store for you guys for the rest of this year and looking forward to 2014?
Tyler: Well we’ve just finished the school tour here in the UK, and going to go back to America and planning to hopefully do the same sort of thing there.
Stevie: We’re just hoping to grow the fan base, make the music and eventually take over the world!
